Front-End Technologies
Front-end is a term that involves the building of webpages and user interfaces for web-applications. It implements the structure, design, behavior, and animation of everything you see on the screen when you open up websites, web applications, or mobile apps. The core 3 technologies that all modern front-end web developers work to master are HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript.
Front end scripting languages are an essential subset of programming languages that perform specific functions within larger languages such as C# or Java. With the advent of HTML5, web application developers will have these scripting languages, particularly AJAX and Actionscript, incorporated in to the browser, as opposed to depending on 3rd party plug-ins.
Back-End Technologies
To understand the back end, or the “server side,” you also have to know the front end and how the two interact. The front end, also called “client-side” programming, is what happens in the browser—everything the end users see and interact with. The back end, on the other hand, happens on the server (on site, or in the cloud) and databases. It’s the machinery that works behind the scenes—everything the end user doesn’t see or directly interact with, but that powers what’s happening.
Back end development refers to the server side of an application and everything that communicates between the database and the browser.
CMS Technologies
A content management system (CMS) manages the creation and modification of digital content. It typically supports multiple users in a collaborative environment. CMS features vary widely. Most CMSs include Web-based publishing, format management, history editing and version control, indexing, search, and retrieval. By their nature, content management systems support the separation of content and presentation. A web content management system (WCM or WCMS) is a CMS designed to support the management of the content of Web pages. Most popular CMSs are also WCMSs. Web content includes text and embedded graphics, photos, video, audio, maps, and program code (such as for applications) that displays content or interacts with the user.
E-Commerce Technologies
E-commerce is the activity of buying or selling of products on online services or over the Internet. Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as mobile commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.
